From 17 to 18 June, the interLIFE Benelux event was organised by Natuurmonumenten in the Netherlands. The location was Assen, in the north of the country.
InterLIFE is a concept that brings LIFE projects together with the aim of learning from each other, exchanging knowledge and strengthening the network. LIFE B4B was also present.
On the first day, various projects presented their topics. This was done through in-depth presentations as well as during a speed carousel, in which each project was briefly explained by the project leader. It was an informative day with lots of information about nature restoration.
Day 2 was devoted to excursions to Fochteloƫrveen and Bargerveen. Here, participants could see how Natuurmonumenten and Staatsbosbeheer are committed to nature restoration, specifically peatland restoration. The value of peatland systems for both nature and humans was emphasised.
Conclusions
Nature conservation and restoration is important, necessary, possible and costs money. For the latter, we are continuing to work within LIFE B4B in our EU project office to seek new sources of funding. Nature restoration delivers measurable results. To achieve these results, cooperation between regions, Member States and projects is essential.
