Polders

General Description
The Polders are located in the north of the provinces of West Flanders and East Flanders. The habitat directive area overlaps with the bird directive areas Polder Complex, Kreken Area, and Het Zwin.
Identification
Typical features of the Polders include the absence of (macro)relief, low building density, and predominant agricultural use.
Landscape Description
The flat and low-lying polder landscape is characteristic of this region. These low areas are influenced by brackish to salty seepage from the sea or canals. Many of the lands have been reclaimed from the sea through artificial drainage. The unique vegetation creates an ideal breeding and wintering habitat for many bird species. Valuable grasslands, depressions, and ditches within the agricultural landscape provide important habitats.
