It is one of the oldest and largest nature reserves in Flanders. It is a rare remnant of the once vast European heathlands. Known as the "backyard of the people of Antwerp," the Kalmthoutse Heide has developed into a true public favorite over the past few years. During your walk, you can discover numerous rare animal and plant species in the Kalmthoutse Heide. Put on your hiking boots and be amazed by this jewel of the Kempen region. And don't forget to climb the Brandtoren to enjoy the breathtaking views over the vast landscape.

In August and September, you can witness the blooming of the common heather, when the heath turns a stunning purple. The various ponds provide a perfect habitat for dragonflies such as the Large Red Damselfly, the Four-spotted Chaser, and for amphibians like the Natterjack Toad and the Moor Frog. The alternating landscape of forest and heath is ideal for species like the Woodlark and the Nightjar, and both the rare Smooth Snake and the Common European Adder can still be found together in the area!
At the visitor center "De Vroente," you can find information about the nature reserve, pick up a walking or cycling map, or visit the permanent exhibition. And even though it can sometimes get quite busy in the Kalmthoutse Heide, it remains a unique experience.
