The site is made up of two main parts: one, north of the Meuse River, includes the Sclaigneau Nature Reserve and slope forests; the other, to the south, features the Bois des Arches Royales, traversed by the Andenelle stream.

The Sclaigneau Reserve contains large areas of pseudo-metallophyte grasslands, as well as calcareous grasslands and limestone outcrops. These habitats are of significant ornithological and entomological interest, hosting regular nesting of the woodlark. The slope forests to the west of the reserve represent the meta-climax stage of calcicolous and neutrophilous beech forests, intersected by an alluvial forest along the Gemine stream.

The forest areas south of the Meuse, particularly in the Bois des Arches Royales, consist mainly of acidophilous woodlands. Scattered patches of dry heathland are found throughout, while the valley floor of the Andenelle stream is lined with alluvial forests. These woodlands also support key species such as the black woodpecker, the middle spotted woodpecker, and various bat species. The southern section of the site also contains some hay meadows and fragments of tall herb communities (megaphorbia), contributing to the habitat of species such as the jersey tiger moth (Callimorpha quadripunctaria) and the great crested newt.
